Chen had been teaching programming for fifteen years before the mission. He had taught in universities, in bootcamps, in an online platform that reached half a million students and paid him a percentage he found embarrassing to think about. A year later, a crew member he had not taught — a hydroponics specialist named Emeka, who had read the lesson document in the store — came to him and said she had taught herself from it. She showed him the combiners she had written. They were correct. He forked the lesson document to add a note: 'Confirmed self-teachable. 2nd instance.' He was very pleased about this.
