dx - 9 - The story keeps repeating
Seeds
- Every generation of software meets a codebase too big for its
people, and calls it a new crisis;
- Layers are zoning, not maps: they change when the terrain changes,
and a map changes only by terraforming;
- Much of our infrastructure is accretion, growing around designs that
did not hold: change data capture around a database asked to do too
much, a connection pooler around poor transaction management;
- Nothing cured it before either: big rewrites mostly failed, and what
helped was local, shared and temporary, containing the mess rather than
curing it;
- Agents do not change the story, they change its speed;
- Agents organised as a team repeat it too: in my pilot, an architect
with workers duplicated more, cost more and did worse than one agent
alone;
- So the question is how to make looking at the mess cheap, shared and
safe enough that people change it locally, before it becomes
infrastructure.
